THE installation ceremony of His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, King of Malaysia as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong serves as another significant event in the nation’s history.
The royal institution has always played a unique and important role in the constitutional framework, political landscape, unity and peace within the society.
The Federal Constitution outlines the king’s powers, including presiding over the swearing-in ceremonies of the prime minister and cabinet members, granting royal assent to bills passed by parliament and representing Malaysia in the local and international arenas.
These responsibilities underscore the integral role of the royal institution in maintaining the continuity and stability of the nation.
The king carries out his duties based on the advice of the prime minister and cabinet, emphasising the constitutional monarchy system. This balance ensures that while the king holds a respected position, the democratic process remains the primary driver of governance.
Although the role of the YDPA is often seen as ceremonial, the royal institution has shown readiness to engage in political matters, especially during crises to ensure political stability.
In addition, one of the royal institution’s crucial roles is fostering national unity and peace.
In our country with a multi-ethnic and multi-religious population, the king serves as an icon and figure of national unity.
His role as the Head of Islam also emphasises the royal institution’s commitment to maintaining religious harmony. This stewardship is vital in preserving social cohesion and addressing any religious tensions that may arise.
In Malaysia’s complex and dynamic socio-political context, the 3R concept (race, religion, and royalty) is closely intertwined. The royal institution stands as the guardian of these elements, ensuring they contribute to national stability and prevent division.
Malaysians must take responsibility to respect and uphold these pillars.
In the digital age and with the proliferation of social media, there are new challenges in managing these matters prudently. The spread of misinformation and provocative content can threaten national harmony.
All Malaysians have a responsibility in their interactions, and in understanding the impact of their words and actions on the balance of racial, religious and the royal institution.
Thus, respecting and safeguarding the royal institution also faces new challenges. Social media platforms provide space for free speech, but this freedom must be practiced with caution.
Malaysians need to balance modernity and tradition, ensuring that respect for the royal institution is always preserved in the digital world. Members of the society should defer their opinions or judgements on 3R-related issues to the legal authorities vested with protecting the country through the Constitution.
The unity and peace that have been built over the years are not worth jeopardising due to the actions of a few.
The unity and solidarity of the people with the royal institution are crucial in maintaining peace and stability. The Rukun Negara taught to all citizens since school should be understood to achieve closer unity and preserve peace in this democratic nation.
It is the responsibility of all members of society to uphold the royal institution for the greater good.
Issues, especially those involving the royal institution, must be handled more prudently and responsibly by the relevant authorities.
There should not be any compromise to any parties attempting to exploit religious, racial and royal matters that could undermine the spirit of unity in our beloved country.
As Malaysia’s socio-political environment evolves rapidly, so does the role of the royal institution in upholding the principles of a constitutional monarchy while adapting to the ever-changing world.

Malaysians pray that His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, King of Malaysia, will lead with wisdom and justice, maintain political stability and foster national unity.
