On June 20th, 2024, Institut Masa Depan Malaysia (MASA), together with the Department of Science and Technology Studies, Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya, co-organised a workshop, entitled “Innovation from the Ground Up: Empowering Communities through Grassroots Innovation in Malaysia.” The workshop aimed to foster understanding of grassroots innovations among stakeholders and provide a platform for local innovators to share their motivations, practices, challenges and future aspirations.
Among the speakers in attendance were:
1. Professor Ts. Dr. Tan Wee Hoe, Chair of the International Network for Governmental Science Advice (INGSA) – Asia;
2. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ng Boon Kwee, Head, Department of Science and Technology Studies, Universiti Malaya;
3. Puan Nur Fadzlina Mahamad Razi, Manager, Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (YIM);
4. Encik Irfan Awang, Founder & CEO of Patentworth International Sdn Bhd; and
5. Encik Marham Dollah Kanan, Innovator and Recipient of MaGRIs Grant.
In summary, the workshop focused on harnessing local knowledge and resources to drive sustainable innovation in Malaysian communities. It highlighted the importance of empowering individuals to address local challenges through creative solutions.
The workshop’s impact included increased community engagement, the development of context-specific innovations and the promotion of sustainable practices. Participants gained valuable skills and inspiration to continue innovating within their communities, fostering a culture of self-reliance and collaboration.
