Muhyiddin’s address at National Recovery Summit give confidence in country’s fight against Covid-19, says think tank CEO

PETALING JAYA: National Recovery Council (NRC) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s address at the National Recovery Summit (NRS) gives confidence that Malaysia’s fight against Covid-19 will not be derailed despite recent changes in government leadership, says Azril Mohd Amin.

The Institut Masa Depan Malaysia (Masa) chief executive officer said many were relieved that the pragmatic and holistic approach outlined when Muhyiddin was prime minister would continue as planned.

Azril said Muhyiddin’s efforts have seen almost two-thirds of the Malaysian population receive cash assistance, businesses assisted and the vulnerable have been protected from the effects of the most challenging economic recession in the history of the country.

He added that through various initiatives, there have been no less than eight economic stimulus and assistance packages given.

“Muhyiddin has once again stressed the steps forward for the short, medium and long term. His vision, if implemented without interruption, would be able to turn crisis into opportunity.

“The fine details to support small and medium businesses as well as the most affected economic sectors; ongoing assistance for the people; concerted efforts to attract foreign as well as domestic direct investment; technological growth and new digitisation will enable Malaysia to appear more equitable, sustainable and stronger than ever before,” said Azril in a statement on Friday (Sept 10).

On Thursday (Sept 9), Muhyiddin in an address at the NRS said there were several themes outlined in charting Malaysia’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, including strengthening the public healthcare system and related industries to boost preparedness for potential future pandemics.

Aside from healthcare, he said economic sectors that required the utmost attention must be identified and assisted to get back on their feet with focus given to tourism, education and the small-medium enterprises.

Azril added that Muhyiddin’s speech was also heart-warming when he urged for solidarity in getting rid of any elements that could cause division among Malaysians, noting that the message was at the right time when we are almost at the end of the health crisis and into the long recovery phase.

“As responsible citizens, we must be determined and united in facing the challenges ahead. Malaysia has the capacity to not only to recover from the crisis, but to emerge better and stronger,” Azril, who is former special officer to Muhyiddin, said.
