PETALING JAYA: Local independent think tank Institut Masa Depan Malaysia (Masa) has appointed Azril Mohd Amin as chief executive officer with effect from Sept 1.
Azril has more than 18 years of experience as a legal practitioner and leader of non-governmental organisations. He regularly engages with leading research institutions in regional and international settings.
From 2017 to 2019, he was the founder and co-chairperson of the Malaysian Alliance of Civil Society Organisations in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Process, a coalition of more than 50 leading civil society organisations with the specific aim of looking into and advocating human rights issues in Malaysia for the United Nations’ Human Rights Council UPR Process. During that time, he conducted research and co-edited a stakeholder’s report for Malaysia’s third cycle of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
He also founded the Centre for Human Rights Research and Advocacy, serving as the team leader in the operations of the refugee and stateless children projects.
Between April 2020 and August 2021, he was also the Special Officer to the-then Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. In that position, he oversaw the implementation of policies and ministerial-level programmes of seven ministries, encompassing social and Islamic affairs clusters. He was also in charge of advising the Prime Minister in the drafting of keynote addresses and speeches.
