On 12 July 2024, Institut Masa Depan Malaysia (MASA) organized a Round Table Meeting (RTD) with economic experts to discuss the issue of subsidy rationalization which is increasingly affecting various layers of society in Malaysia.
The Chairman of MASA, YB Tan Sri Dato’ Haji Muhyiddin Haji Mohd Yassin also took the time to attend to hear the views and analysis from experts in related fields.
Among the experts present at the session are:
1. YBhg. Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr. Zakariah Abdul Rashid, Adjunct Professor, Ungku Aziz Center for Development Studies, University of Malaya;
2. YBhg. Senior Professor Dato’ Dr. Rajah Rasiah, Executive Director, Asia-Europe Institute, University of Malaya;
3. YBrs. Professor Dr. Gairuzazmi Mat Ghani, Dean of Kulliyyah Economics and Management Sciences, IIUM;
4. YBrs. Dr. Khalid Abdul Hamid, MASA Fellow;
5. YBrs. Dr. Shankaran Nambiar, MASA Fellow;
6. YBrs. Dr. Zulkiply Omar, Senior Research Fellow, Social Wellbeing Research Center (SWRC), University of Malaya;
7. YBrs. Mr. Erhanfadli Mohd Azrai, Chief Executive Officer, Kotak Sakti Sdn Bhd & Founder, RED ANGPOW; and
8. YBrs. Mr. Azlan Awang, Senior Fellow, Malaysian Malay Chamber of Commerce (DPMM) & Researcher and Spokesperson, Malay Economic Action Council (MTEM).
The discussion session was also attended by MASA Board of Trustees members, namely YB Datuk Dr. Mohd Radzi Md Jidin and YBhg. Datuk Dr. Marzuki Mohamad and the Chief Executive Officer of MASA, YBrs. Mr. Azril Mohd Amin.
This session organized by MASA focuses on the discussion of subsidy targeting measures to ensure a balance between the increase in the price of goods and the well-being of the affected people.
Through the discussion, the government was urged to continue monitoring and evaluating the socio-economic effects that arise to ensure that subsidy targeting is implemented more prudently so as not to burden the people, especially the less able.
